Improving Fish Passage on the Rother

Once complete, this fantastic project will restore a loop of the Rother, opening up 14km of the river for fish to move up and downstream.

At the moment we’re trialling the removal of two sluice gates in South Ambersham. The site is currently under monitoring to further understand river flows. This is the first step to restore fish passage.

Water has been allowed to flow into a meander which has been cut off for years, and it’s so satisfying to see the changes! The loop is beginning to re-naturalise beautifully, and is chock full of wildlife.

The next step will be to remove the sluice entirely, allowing fish and other wildlife to move freely throughout the river in this area.

Big thanks to our neighbouring Ouse and Adur Rivers Trust who helped to instigate action, and to Cowdray Estate for supporting this project, and the Environment Agency for their funding and help, and to all for being as enthusiastic about it as we are!
