For Great Big Green Week we teamed up with the Final Straw Foundation and the Brook Meadow Conservation Group for a clean up of the River Ems.
In just three hours our fabulous group of 15 volunteers collected a massive 91.90kg of rubbish.
Their haul included:
45 plastic bottles
54 glass bottles
75 aluminium cans
15 dog toys
A car bumper, household door and large gas cannister
A kettle, birthday party debris and a bag of used nappies!
A huge thank you to these volunteer heroes who have helped clean up a globally rare chalk stream. The site at Brook Meadow Nature Reserve is home to legally protected kingfishers and the shy water vole - Britain’s fastest-declining mammal.
By removing this 91.90kg of rubbish, our volunteers have helped a fragile ecosystem, as well as prevented a wave of rubbish reaching our ocean.
